This 1965 book by Colonel Russell P. Reeder Jr. tells about some of those awarded the Medal of Honor. This award was created in 1861 to recognize “gallantry in action” (`Introduction’). About 2,100 were presented during the Civil War. The standards have been higher since 1900. `Part One’ tells about some of the awards in WW I: Lieutenant Izac, Oscar Schmidt, Sergeant York, Frank Luke, Lieutenant Talbot and Sergeant Robinson, Louis Van Iersel. `Part Two” tells about C in WW II: Hank Elrod, Butch O’Hare, Captain Cromwell, Father O’Callahan, Bob Bush, Audie Murphy, Bobbie Brown, Fred Castle. `Part Three’ tells about some of the awards in Korea: Bill Dean, Melvin Brown, Billie Kannell.
