Arnold Lobel Book of Mother Goose: A Treasury of More Than 300 Classic Nursery Rhymes

Author: Lobel, Arnold

Knopf is proud to reissue the complete and unabridged Arnold Lobel-illustrated treasury of Mother Goose rhymes, originally published in 1986 as The Random House Book of Mother Goose and unavailable for several years. Reviewers were unanimous in their acclaim of a collection “brimming over with energy…distinguished by abundant humor and a rich variety of moods and styles” (School Library Journal, starred review). The beloved creator of the Frog and Toad books included 306 nursery rhymes–several hundred more than any other quality edition of Mother Goose–and “all are illustrated in a cornucopia of drawings which demonstrates the range of [his] technique and imagination” (Kirkus Reviews). The New York Times Book Review called it “brilliant,” while The Washington Post Book World praised it as “surely one of the most satisfying nursery-rhyme books ever made.”

Now We Are Six (The Winnie-the-Pooh Series #4)

Author: Milne, A. A.Part of a Series: Winnie-the-Pooh

Now We Are Six is a classic book of children’s verses, some about A.A. Milne’s best-loved characters Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh and others in a more general nonsense vein. The title comes from the final poem of the book:
When I was One,
I had just begun.
When I was Two,
I was nearly new.
When I was Three
I was hardly me.
When I was Four,
I was not much more.
When I was Five, I was just alive.
But now I am Six, I’m as clever as clever,
So I think I’ll be six now for ever and ever.

However, the author says in the introduction:
We have been nearly three years writing this book. We began it when we were very young…and now we are six. So, of course, bits of it seem rather baby-ish to us […] So we want you to know that the name of the book doesn’t mean that this is us being six all the time, but the it is about as far as we’ve got at present, and we half think of stopping there.

Real Mother Goose

Author: Wright, Blanche Fisher

This book was originally published in 1916, and there is good reason it is still in circulation today. Fisher Wright’s abundant illustrations of the close to 300 rhymes in this collection are both beautifully done and a great exploration for the little ones of times gone past. The gentle coloring helps to create a soothing look for the eyes, and children will have fun seeing how children of a different era dressed and played. Included are all of the Mother Goose rhymes that children still know today, plus lots that parents and children will have fun hearing for the first time. (Ages infant-6)
