Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe

Author: Lemmon, Gayle Tzemach

The life Kamila Sidiqi had known changed overnight when the Taliban seized control of the city of Kabul. After receiving a teaching degree during the civil war—a rare achievement for any Afghan woman—Kamila was subsequently banned from school and confined to her home. When her father and brother were forced to flee the city, Kamila became the sole breadwinner for her five siblings. Armed only with grit and determination, she picked up a needle and thread and created a thriving business of her own.

The Dressmaker of Khair Khana tells the incredible true story of this unlikely entrepreneur who mobilized her community under the Taliban. Former ABC Newsreporter Gayle Tzemach Lemmon spent years on the ground reporting Kamila’s story, and the result is an unusually intimate and unsanitized look at the daily lives of women in Afghanistan. These women are not victims; they are the glue that holds families together; they are the backbone and the heart of their nation.

Afghanistan’s future remains uncertain as debates over withdrawal timelines dominate the news. The Dressmaker of Khair Khana moves beyond the headlines to transport you to an Afghanistan you have never seen before. This is a story of war, but it is also a story of sisterhood and resilience in the face of despair. Kamila Sidiqi’s journey will inspire you, but it will also change the way you think about one of the most important political and humanitarianissues of our time.

Common Sense Business for Kids

Author: Daniels, Kathryn

Through a series of interviews, author Kathryn Daniels collected dozens of Anthony Maybury’s anecdotes and common sense strategies about what it takes to be successful in business. The result, “Common Sense Business for Kids,” is a collaboration to benefit and encourage kids interested in entering the business world; but Maybury’s wisdom is ageless. Using practical judgment derived from experience rather than study, and using real-world examples, Anthony Maybury explains common sense realities behind basic business principles, including: fixed and variable costs, market potential, research, price strategies, inventory management, salesmanship, and management techniques. Mr. Maybury discusses characteristics needed to be a successful entrepreneur, manager, or employee. Mr. Maybury comments: “I hope the ‘common sense’ I share with you will be beneficial as you embark on your own career, that it helps you appreciate the value in being aware, of looking at things from multiple perspectives, and of being ready to adapt. I hope you see that even though success in business may seem complicated, it’s really just ‘common sense.’ ”

Capitalism For Kids: Growing Up To Be Your Own Boss

Author: Hess, Karl

“Capitalism for Kids” is an introduction to entrepreneurship. Karl Hess stresses how a person can earn a profit in business while maintaining the highest possible standards of honesty and integrity. Includes a self-test to help the reader determine how enterprising he/she really is, as well as an excellent chapter on “Capitalism and Other Isms” that clearly defines capitalism, democratic socialism, socialism, and communism. Although written with young people in mind, many adults will benefit by reading this book, especially the section which was written specifically for parents and teachers. Highly recommended. Ages 10 up.

Pushcart War

Author: Merrill, Jean

The pushcarts have declared war! New York City’s streets are clogged with huge, rude trucks that park where they want, hold up traffic, and bulldoze into anything that is in their way, and the pushcart peddlers are determined to get rid of them. But the trucks are just as determined to get rid of the pushcarts, and chaos results in the city.

The pushcarts have come up with a brilliant strategy that will surely let the hot air out of their enemies. The secret weapon–a peashooter armed with a pin; the target–the vulnerable truck tires. Once the source of the flat tires is discovered, the children of the city joyfully join in with their own pin peashooters. The pushcarts have won one battle, but can they win the war against a corrupt mayor who taxes the pins and prohibits the sale of dried peas?

Fever, 1793

Author: Anderson, Laurie Halse

It’s late summer 1793, and the streets of Philadelphia are abuzz with mosquitoes and rumors of fever. Down near the docks, many have taken ill, and the fatalities are mounting. Now they include Polly, the serving girl at the Cook Coffeehouse. But fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook doesn’t get a moment to mourn the passing of her childhood playmate. New customers have overrun her family’s coffee shop, located far from the mosquito-infested river, and Mattie’s concerns of fever are all but overshadowed by dreams of growing her family’s small business into a thriving enterprise. But when the fever begins to strike closer to home, Mattie’s struggle to build a new life must give way to a new fight-the fight to stay alive.
