Whole Nother Story, A

Author: Soup, Dr. Cuthbert

The Cheesemans are a family on the run. Mr. Cheeseman and his late wife invented a device so powerful and amazing that all sorts of evildoers want to get their greedy hands on it. Mr. Cheeseman and his three children must keep their identities secret and stay one step ahead of the villains as they run from town to town, escape dangerous situations, even change their names. Luckily, though they may not have the names they were born with, they do have their smarts — and quite a bit of good luck. They’ll soon encounter a bunch of unusual but helpful characters, some of whom are really far more than they appear to be.

The first of these characters is Dr. Cuthbert Soup. He not only runs the National Center for Unsolicited Advice, he also serves as narrator for this madcap adventure story, offering a word or two of wisdom from time to time. Sometimes, Dr. Soup even has four words — like now:

Drift House: The First Voyage (Drift House #1)

Author: Peck, DalePart of a Series: Drift House

In the tradition of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and A Wrinkle in Time comes the first book in an exciting fantasy series about three siblings’ adventures on the high sea—the Sea of Time, that is.

After 9/11, Susan and her younger brothers, Charles and Murray, are sent to live with their uncle Farley in Canada. Uncle Farley’s house looks like a ship perched at the edge of the sea, but it’s not until a great flood comes that the house’s name—Drift House—starts to make sense. Floating aimlessly on the Sea of Time, the ship-like house begins to yield its many secrets—including a mural that seems to predict the future, a dumbwaiter that enables Murray to travel into the future and back again, and a parrot historian who’s also a gifted translator. But when a clan of diabolical mermaids trick the children and their uncle into helping them carry out a plan that will stop time forever, it will take all of Susan’s ingenuity along with some help from a great whale, a band of pirates, and a magic carpet—to set things straight.

Past Time

Author: Llewellyn, Michael

Michael Llewellyn is the author of nineteen published novels in multiple genres including historical fiction and mystery. Past Time is the second in his time travel series and continues the adventures of Madeleine “Maddy” St. Jacques, a New Orleans librarian with a passion for history and amateur sleuthing. Her older paramour and partner in time crime is Henri Chabrol, a Tulane University professor with access to parallel universes via the secretive August Ones. In the first book, Still Time, Madeleine was hurtled back to 1861 New Orleans, a world of black masters, white slaves, glamorous courtesans of color and assorted shady souls out to thwart her mission. In Past Time, she travels to Tsarist Russia where she is thrust into the midst of a power struggle for control of the largest—and most unstable—empire on earth. Once again Madeleine struggles to learn why she was sent back in time and how she might keep history on course. The truth eventually comes, but at a terrible price.
From the back cover:
The August Ones are back!
Those enigmatic entities manipulating age-old time corridors have once again propelled New Orleans librarian Madeleine St. Jacques into the past. This time her destination is Russia circa 1914, an empire ruled by Tsar Nicholas II and the fabled Romanov dynasty. Arriving in frozen, wintry St. Petersburg, Madeleine finds herself amid grand dukes and duchesses, gypsies and imperial guardsmen, ferocious revolutionaries and corrupt holy men, each with a disparate stake in a doomed nation hurtling toward apocalypse.
“If those superstitious fools learn you’re a time traveler, they’ll tear you to pieces!”
As the guest of Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna, Madeleine is seduced by the opulent Romanov world of endless balls, glittering soirees and oceans of vodka while the furtive monster of revolution lurks just outside the palace doors. Her royal idyll is imperiled when she discovers the most imminent threat to the dynasty lies within the family itself and wonders if it’s her destiny to stop it before it’s…
PAST TIME.

Dead to Get Ready–and Go (The Dead Detective Mysteries Book 4)

Author: Herring, PegPart of a Series: Dead Detective Mysteries

Discontented with existence on the ship, Seamus decides it’s time to do what he’s been avoiding for six decades. Though he knows his wife and best friend teamed up to murder him, there are things about the crime he doesn’t understand, as well as emotions he hasn’t yet been able to face. With fellow Dead Detective Ronnie to assist, Seamus returns to 1953 to face his memories and answer questions that remain about his death. In a world much different from today, in an America where questions of social justice are just beginning to be addressed, the two detectives find lots going on under the surface. Chicago offers opportunities for crime on many levels, and there’s always someone around to take advantage of those with secrets. Seamus learns a shocking truth about his wife and the secret she kept from him that eventually led to his murder. In the end he and Ronnie must work to save the lives of two young cops brave enough-maybe foolhardy enough-to try to discover what really happened the night Seamus Hanrahan died.

His heroine, Madeleine “Maddy” St. Jacques, 33, is a New Orleans librarian with a penchant for history and amateur sleuthing. Her paramour and partner in time crime is Henri Chabrol, 42, a Tulane University professor with access to parallel universes via the secretive August Ones. Assigned to repair potential tears in the curtains of times past, Madeleine is catapulted to 1861 New Orleans where she encounters black masters, white slaves, glamorous courtesans of color and assorted shady souls creating adventure at every turn. When the Civil War erupts and the city falls to the Union, Madeleine experiences love, death and devastating betrayal as she battles to keep history on course and learn why she was sent back in time.
